Cowtown Brush Up (CTBU), a nonprofit, is one of the most successful neighborhood revitalization programs ever instituted. In 1991, 33 homes in low-income neighborhoods were given a fresh coat of paint, which in turn enhanced these neighborhoods' images. The ripple effect then began, as entire communities discovered a renewed sense of pride. As a result, residents began to improve their properties on their own.
Today, over a decade later, approximately 2,020 homes have been painted. This is truly a community effort, with the City of Fort Worth, private business, churches, schools, non-profit organizations, and literally hundreds of citizen volunteers working together to help their neighbors. The program truly highlights the spirit of Fort Worth.
Fort Worth considers the diversity and vitality of its neighborhoods among its most valuable assets. Therefore, the tremendous need for revitalization in many of Fort Worth's central city neighborhoods remains its greatest challenge. Houses in many of these neighborhoods are deteriorating due to the financial and physical inability of many homeowners to maintain them, particularly the elderly and disabled. The City and its non-profit housing partners have a wide range of programs to address this need, but paramount among them is the annual CTBU. Prior to CTBU day a professional paint contactor preps the houses in time for volunteers to paint.
